NMC’s next order could be “All RMPs to work for one day every week for free in civil hospitals”

The Midday meal scheme or the PM Poshan scheme is an excellent Government initiative which is in consonance with the duties and responsibilities of the Government. However providing provisions, infrastructure and manpower for the said scheme is the liability of the Government. All traders cannot be forced to contribute 100kg wheat to nearby school free of cost every month nor can pharma companies be expected to chip in with medicines for this scheme as a philanthropic gesture. Finding qualified and suitable persons for a job is also the responsibility of the Government. Expecting Post Graduate medical students to work in the scheme free of cost when they themselves are expected to pay hefty sum for the postgraduate education is unfair to say the least.
While we are at it we should also mandate that all Registered Medical Practitioners should compulsorily serve in civil hospitals for one day every week. This compulsory drafting without any provision for any remuneration to be paid to them is exploitation of bonded labour. They cannot leave or protest because they await the degree. They have paid heftily to learn the science and art of their medical specialty. Forcing them to do work which is the Government’s duty just because they are to get their degree is taking advantage of them. They are already overworked , strained and harassed. Private medical colleges underpay them or even do not pay them at times. The Government cannot escape its liability by passing it on to individuals as a statutory requirement.
Just because the Post Graduate medical students are qualified, they are not criminals who can be ordered to serve the society as part of their sentence. If their services are needed, pay them to do the work you assign them. This is not an unjust demand.
